Berlin demands immediate release of Belarusian political prisoners

Such a statement has been made by Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert.

The official representative of the Federal government notes that visiting the photo exhibition “Über Leben”, dedicated to refugees camps, in the German Historical Museum in Berlin this week, Angela Merkel recalled tight situation of the Belarusian opposition. She called upon Lukashenka to “guarantee his citizens the freedoms most people in Europe enjoy”, informs the website of the German government.

The German government expresses concern over the political trials held over the participants of the peaceful rally on December 19.

“They are people who declared their views courageously, came out for freedom and democracy. They deserve our solidarity,” underlined the spokesperson of Angela Merkel.

On behalf of the Federal government he urged Minsk to release all political prisoners immediately, Radio Svaboda informs.

As said by him, “No normalization of relations between Germany and Belarus is possible until oppositionists are behind the bars or under house arrest, and until flagrant human rights violations are on the agenda in Belarus.”
