Arrest of Alena Likhavid found “lawful”

The Minsk City Court upheld the verdict to Alena Likhavid, the mother of political prisoner Mikita Likhavid.

The woman was sentenced to 10 days of arrest for taking part in silent protests on July 20. The court decision was delivered by judge of the Tsentralny district court of Minsk Vaitsakhovich.

“The only difference in hearing my case in the Minsk City Court was that the judge took time to consider the case privately before delivering a ruling,” Alena Likhavid told Radio Svaboda.

The woman is going to appeal against the court decision to a higher court.

On September 7, Alena Likhavid filed a complaint to the prosecutor’s office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs regarding her punishment and confinement in a detention centre in Akrestsin Street.

“I complain at very bad confinement conditions, including insanitation in cells and humiliating treatment of inmates,” Alena Likhavid explained.

Alena Likhavid spent the last three days of her 10-day arrest in a solitary cell.
