Marek Bucko: European Union repeats the same mistake

Marek Bucko, the first secretary of the Polish Embassy in Minsk, comments on an attempt of the EU to resume relations with official Minsk.

In his opinion, the previous experience shows the West cannot influence Belarus under the existing political system in the country. So, no full “unfreeze” is possible.

“Another dialogue or unfreeze is just a déjà vu. We have already seen it seven or eight times... Nothing will come of it. It's possible it will be a bargain for one or two or three political prisoners. But that's all,” Bucko said in an interview to Euroradio.

Marek Bucko thinks European officials saw the sanctions, which are actually symbolic, were not effective and decided to establish a dialogue. But they are making the same mistake, Bucko says.
