Opposition fails to reach consensus on “election”

Sending off journalists from the round table discussion did not help the leaders of the opposition movements.

Participants of the round table discussion started discussing the common aims for the “parliamentary election” with a request to journalists to leave the event.

Leader of the United Civil Party (UCP) Anatol Lyabedzka says the participants of the discussion did not change their positions: Fair World and For Freedom movement want to run  in the election to the end, the UCP and BPF party are ready to withdraw candidates, Tell the Truth campaign is set to withdraw if political prisoners are not released, the BCD party stands against proposing candidates for the polls.

“There are no tangible results. But it's good such a discussion and communication were carried out,” the politician said.

The opposition will hardly prepare a joint message for voters. Admitting there are no real elections, the opposition cannot give people advice either they should vote or not.

The organizer of the event, the leader of the Council of Belarusian Intellectuals, is disappointed with the discussion.

“Everyone understands consolidation is needed, but they cannot move in this direction for the reasons one can only guess about because they don't say them,” Uladzimir Kolas noted.
