Freelance journalist in Brest keeps appealing fine

Ales Liauvhuk is preparing an appeal to the Chairman of the Brest Regional Court.

Ales Liauvhuk, member of the Belarusian Association of Journalists, is preparing an appeal to the Chairman of the Brest Regional Court after it upheld verdict of the Leninski District Court of Brest, which fined the journalist 6 million rubles.

A few days ago, Ales Liauvhuk received a copy of the ruling, which, with reference to the State Security Committee’s office in the Brest region, says that Liauchuk is a correspondent of the Polish TV channel Belsat. The journalist denies the fact, as well as that he was reportedly engaged in “illegal production and distribution of media products”, for which he was punished under Part 2 of Article 22.9 of the Code of Administrative Offences. It was for this offense that the court fined Liauchuk 40 basic units (6,000,000 rubles).
