Russia has no hopes South Ossetia and Abkhazia be recognised by civilised countries

8

The Ministry of Foreign Affaires of the Russian Federation supposes that South Ossetia and Abkhazia may be recognised by Belarus, Syria, Libya, Jordan and Morocco, besides Nicaragua.

Kommersant daily writes it referring to a high ranking source in the ministry.

Belarus is expected to consider a matter of recognising the republics after September 28, when the “parliamentary election” will be held in the country. What concerns the rest of the countries in the list, there is no precise information about their possible actions. Russia’s partners in the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan), still have no definite positions on status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia on August 26, Nicaragua joined this decision on September 3. Russia officially established diplomatic relations with South Ossetia and Abkhazia on September 9, Tuesday. Candidatures for posts of ambassadors in these countries have been chosen. In the near future, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will sign intergovernmental agreements on friendship and cooperation, having been visaed by foreign ministers, with the leaders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“There is a point in the conciliated document on military cooperation with Russia, but still it is a general political agreement. We have plans to conclude a separate agreement on military cooperation,” Abkhazian foreign minister Sergei Shamba told journalists.

However, Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov reported to the Russian president that an agreement had been reached with the South Ossetian and Abkhazian authorities that the Russian military contingent will consist of 3800 people in each republic. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the units were not peacekeepers, but military contingents.
