“Council on Human Rights” created by Lukashenka’s administration

It is known that representatives of the public association “Belarusian Helsinki Committee” are invited to this “council”.

As the BelaPAN was informed by the chairman of the BHC Aleh Hulak, on January 22 he received a phone call from the administration of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, told about forming the council, and offered the human rights organisation nominate its representatives to it.

At the moment an enactment on this consulting body. “It is too early to speak about what the council would be engaged in. We haven’t seen the ready enactment about that, we do not know details, the make-up. Nevertheless, we have given our preliminary agreement for participation of our representative in this council. The BHC council is to decide who it would be,” Hulak said.

“The BHC declared earlier that we hsall use any possibilities o improve the situation with human rights in Belarus. Certainly, this all is to depend on how this project would be realized, and what authority would the consulting council on human rights have,” the chairman of the BHC said.

The presidential Administration was unavailable for comments on the matter so far.
