The Belarus Free Theatre Visited Stiven Spielberg in Los Angeles

Steven Spielberg, director and prominent Hollywood producer, met with representatives of The Belarus Free Theatre at his DreamWorks Studios headquarters in Los Angeles.

The Free Theatre is currently on its U.S. tour supported by the Walt Disney founded California Institute of the Arts, which also invited Belarusians to teach masters classes at its theater school. The Belarusian company will also perform their well-known “Discover Love” and “Generation Jeans” plays in Washington, DC, San Diego, CA and Los Angeles, CA.

The meeting was attended by Steven Spielberg and his political adviser Andy Spahn, and from the Free Theatre side, Founders Natalia Kaliada, Nikolai Khalezin and Stage Director Vladimir Shcherban. The agenda of the meeting was related to a number of different issues, from the current political situation in Belarus to future Theatre projects capable of breaking through the cultural and informational isolation of their native country.

Steven Spielberg agreed the arts can have a real impact on society. He also shared the concerns of Tom Stoppard, Vaclav Havel, Harold Pinter and Mick Jagger, among others, regarding the violations of freedoms of speech, expression and religion in Belarus.
