Prosecutor’s office refused to react to Mikhalevich’s tortures testimony “in his absence”

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus has rejected a proposal of Alyaksei Mikhalevich to offer in his absence an explanation on his statements about tortures in the KGB pre-trial detention centre.

The BelaPAN agency has been informed about that by the wife of the politician.

As said by her, for three days Milana Mikhalevich tried to reach on the phone a representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus, who had signed the summons to her husband with a request to come for presentation of the case. She wanted to find out how this procedure could be organized. For instance, notarized testimony could be offered. However, she was told all the time that the official was working in the KGB jail.

Mikhalevich’s wife informed that on March 23 an investigator of the Prosecutor General’s Office contacted her, and stated that the testimony offered in any other form except provided for by the law, would be invalid: before receiving explanations an investigator should clarify rights and responsibilities for Mikhalevich, and warn about responsibility for perjury. In this connection, one can present one’s case only in person and only on the territory of Belarus, Milana Mikhalevich said.
