Lionik Tarasewicz Turns 60

The famous Belarusian artist is celebrating a jubilee.

Lionik Tarasewicz (Leon Tarasewicz) is a Belarusian by origin, was born on March 14, 1957 in the village of Waliły of the Białystok county of the Podlaskie Voivodship of Poland. He graduated the lyceum in Suprasl, and the art faculty in the Warsaw Art Academy in 1984. He made his graduation work under the supervision of Tadeusz Dominik.

Since 1996, Lionik Tarasewicz teaches in the Art Academy. He stresses out his Belarusian origin and takes an active part in the life of the Belarusian diaspora in Poland. Mr. Tarasiewicz is one of the founders of the annual rock festival of the Belarusian music “Basowiszcza”. He works with the Warsaw Gallery “Foksal”, the Poznan Gallery “Ego” and the Liublin Gallery “Biala”. He participated in many art exhibitions in Belarus (IN-FORMATION 95 and others).

Awards

Lionik Tarasewicz received the award of the newspaper “Polityka” in 2000, the award of Jan Cybis (also in 2000) and the award of the Sofia and Jerzy Nowosielski Foundation.

In 2007, Tarasewicz received the Grand Prize of the Culture Foundation for 2006 "for a significant contribution to classical painting and art."

On January 17, 2011 he was rewarded the Cross of the Order of the Renaissance of Poland "for the outstanding contribution to the national culture of Poland, for achievements in the field of artistic creativity and teaching".

In the published rating of the most expensive Polish artists at auctions in Poland in 2008, Tarasewicz was ranked 10th: for his painting, created in 1985, the collector paid 150 thousand zlotys (about 45 000 euros).

One of the biggest Polish newspapers “Gazeta Wyborcza” has congradulated the famous artist on his jubilee.
