Blogger Lapshin Extradited From Belarus Imprisoned For 3 Years
ALEXANDER LAPSHIN

The prosecutor requested 6,5 years in jail for Lapshin.

Judge of the Baku court for severe crimes Alovsat Abbasov sentenced blogger Alexander Lapshin to three years in prison under articles on anti-state public appeals and violation of the state border. This was reported by the news agency ARA.

The trial was attended by representatives of the embassies of Russia, Israel and Ukraine, of which Lapshin is a citizen.

"My guilt before the Azerbaijani people has only moral character, it doesn’t lie in the legal field in any way. I understand how important Karabakh is for Azerbaijan. Under no circumstances I would get engaged into a criminal relationship with the Armenian authorities, " - Lapshin said on July 19 in his last word.

The prosecutor requested 6,5 years of imprisonment for Lapshin.

Alexander Lapshin was detained in Minsk on the night of December 15, 2016 and extradited to Azerbaijan on February 7, 2016.

He was accused of having violated the state border for trips to Nagorno-Karabakh, and of the anti-state activities for criticizing Azerbaijani politics in his articles on the Internet.

The authorities of Russia, Israel and Armenia opposed the blogger's extradition. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that this decision did not correspond with the spirit of allied relations. On February 8, in a telephone conversation, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev thanked Aliaksandr Lukashenka for having extradited Lapshin.
