BCD Demands To Unblock Charter’97 Immediately

The politicians urge Belarusians to suppor the independent website.

This is said in the following statement by the BCD:

- The Belarusian Christian Democracy is categorically against any restrictions of the right to freedom of speech in Belarus, limitations and censorship on the Internet and calls for an immediate lifting of the blocking of the Charter’97 resource. The blocking of an independent Internet publication is a gross violation of human rights in our country.

The Belarusian authorities declare their intentions to “normalize relations” with the West, make every effort to “attract investment” into the country, including in the IT sphere. However, the repressive measures that the government continues to use against the political opposition, independent media, business and all citizens of their own country puts Belarus on a par with African and Asian despotism.

Censorship on the Internet, repression of independent journalists make it impossible to fully cooperate with the European Union, other civilized democratic countries. Therefore, violations of human rights in Belarus always have not only political but also economic consequences that affect the lives of citizens throughout the country.

Over the past year, the number of repressions in Belarus has increased in virtually all areas: both with respect to independent journalists, and civil society, and political opposition. The type of repression has changed, but this should not mislead human rights organizations or governments of democratic countries.

We demand that the Belarusian authorities, the Belarusian law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Information stop the illegal harassment of journalists, stop censorship on the Internet and stop the repression of Belarusian citizens. We call upon the Belarusian political forces, civil society, all citizens of Belarus today to support the independent resource Charter’97.

The authorities deliberately destroy freedom of speech in Belarus. A month ago, the work of the Belarusian Partisan was put under threat, now the Charter’97 is blocked. If we remain silent, do not show solidarity, we will not defend independent Internet media, then tomorrow the authorities will destroy all independent media in our country.

Important to note, on January 24 the Lukashenka regime blocked the independent informational resource Charter97.org. First Deputy Minister of Information Ihar Lutski confirmed the fact of blocking.
