Lukashenka Worried About NATO's Expansion Eastwards

The governor regards the countries of the North-Atlantic Alliance as rivals.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka condemned NATO's expansion to the East. He said this at the solemn meeting held on 22 February to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Belarus.

“We are living in the era of the large-scale re-division of the world. Classical international law and its basis – sovereignty of the state – is purposefully and cunningly discredited. The importance of military force has increased colossally,” - Lukashenka's press-center quotes the ruler.

Lukashenka stated that the interference of major geopolitical players in the internal affairs of states, including European countries, provoked internal military conflicts. According to him, subsequent militarization of Eastern Europe is currently underway, extra military contingents are unfolded there.

The Belarusian ruler reminded that these countries were in the same military block - the Warsaw Pact - not very long ago. "After the disintegration of the Soviet Union we were promised that NATO would not expand eastwards if we put an end to the Warsaw Pact. The pact was disbanded. And we know by whom. We are not ashamed of it,” - Lukashenka added. He underlined that the NATO countries will never fulfill their obligations of non-expansion.
