Belarusian Ambassador In Lithuania Presented Note In Connection With Fire At BelNPP

Lithuania demands from the Belarusian authorities to provide detailed information about the incident.

Yesterday, the Belarusian Ambassador to Lithuania was summoned to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, where he received a note in connection with the fire at the Astravets nuclear power plant, Belsat reports.

A request was made to provide detailed information on the incident that occurred on 17 February as soon as possible.

The Lithuanian competent authorities and the public were not informed about the incident, which occurred more than two months ago.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that in 2016, there were six known incidents at the Astravets nuclear power plant, which raise serious doubts about the quality of this project.

"Some time ago, there was a serious incident at the construction stage, then Lithuania also sent a request to Belarus. And it was confirmed that the incident had taken place. We will see what the Belarusian side will do. This information must be verified. The entire construction process is very important for safety and reliability. We are concerned that such things happen 50 kilometers from Vilnius, and we are not officially informed," – Lithuanian Energy Minister Zhigimantas Vaiciunas told Belsat.

We remind that Charter97.org reported about a strong fire at the construction site of the nuclear power plant in Astravets in February. The management of the power plant assures that there wasn’t a fire, but only a short-circuit of the temporary power cable. This is not the first incident during the construction, which is hidden from the public and international structures.
