European Parliament Adopted a Resolution Demanding Tough Sanctions Against Lukashenka's Regime

The usurper must also be listed and deprived of financial support.

The European Parliament (EP) adopted a resolution on the situation in Belarus condemning the illegal government and supporting the democratic opposition; the document requires sanctions against Lukashenka, his security apparatus, as well as Russians who support the Belarusian regime, interfax.by reports.

The resolution rejects the official results of the August 9 elections in Belarus, which, as the document says, were held with gross violations of international standards. The resolution also speaks of the non-recognition of Lukashenka as the president of Belarus.

The European Parliament "strongly supports EU sanctions against those responsible for electoral fraud and repression in Belarus, including Lukashenka; calls on the Council (EU) to impose broad and effective sanctions against all Belarusian executors of electoral fraud, violence, and repression without delay and in close coordination with international partners."

The EP calls on the EU institutions and the governments of the EU countries "to study the possibility of expanding the sanctions list in order to include Russian citizens who are directly involved in supporting Lukashenka's regime in Belarus."

The document calls for abandoning financial support for the Belarusian regime, including lending through the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, while at the same time supporting human rights defenders, activists, and representatives of civil society in Belarus.

The resolution also calls on to support our country's citizens applying for asylum in the EU and students expelled from universities for an active civil position.
