Moscow has been warned.

The State Department has called Russian President Vladimir Putin's new nuclear threats "hollow," condemning them, the Voice of America writes.

Responding to a request for comment on Putin's remarks, State Department spokesman Ned Price said: "We think any empty talk about nuclear weapons is completely irresponsible".

He added that since the Cold War, nuclear powers around the world, including China, India, the United States and Russia itself, had always guaranteed that "a nuclear war is something that can never be conducted and that it cannot be won".

"We believe that any other rhetoric, whether rattling nuclear weapons or even threatening to use tactical nuclear weapons, is irresponsible. It is dangerous and goes against the spirit of that statement, which has been the foundation of the nuclear non-proliferation regime since the Cold War," Price said.
