European Commission Recommends Granting Ukraine Candidate Status for EU Accession

The president of the EC notes that Ukraine pursued good macroeconomic results.

The European Commission has officially recommended granting Ukraine candidate status for accession to the European Union. This was announced by the EC President Ursula von der Leyen at a briefing in Brussels, reports "Европейской правды".

"The Commission recommends to the Council, first, to give Ukraine a European perspective and second, to grant candidate status. Of course, given the understanding that the country will implement a certain set of further important reforms," von der Leyen said.

The European Commission's statement says Ukraine has generally advanced in achieving stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities.

It also noted that Ukraine pursues its good macroeconomic performance, showing decent attention to macroeconomic and financial stability, demanding the continuation of ambitious structural economic reforms.

"We know that Ukrainians are willing to die for a European perspective. We want them to live the European dream with us," von der Leyen added.

On Thursday, the leaders of France, Germany and Italy in Kyiv said they supported granting Ukraine candidate status.

An official decision on the status for Ukraine is to be made at a summit of EU leaders on June 23.
