ISW: Putin Fails Miserably In Talks With Xi Jinping

The content of the final document after the meeting in Moscow has become known.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has suffered a fiasco after talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Moscow on March 20.

According to the findings of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the dictator was not able to achieve what he wanted and agree on a closer bilateral partnership with the Chinese authorities.

In the report, analysts cite a joint statement by the PRC and the Russian Federation "on deepening comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation, entering a new era", which the parties signed during the meeting. ISW notes that the document reflects a more restrained version of the development of Russian-Chinese relations. It differs from what the Russian leader had hoped for, analysts said.

"Putin, on the contrary, announced a number of measures indicating Russia's continued orientation towards and dependence on China in the energy and economic sectors, which seem very one-sided compared to Xi's relatively moderate commitments," the experts point out.

In particular, the Chinese leader made two main statements: the first was that China would support Russia's initiatives in the UN Security Council, and the second was about the "political settlement" of the war in Ukraine. However, Xi Jinping did not make any harsher statements in this regard. In particular, he did not publicly promise Putin to support Russia in the war with Ukraine.

"Such rhetoric clearly lacks the language normally used in diplomatic speeches to show that both sides have reached final and substantive agreements," ISW said.
