On Saturday, March 22, Belarusians in the US, mostly young ones, held a meeting near the building of the UN headquarters in New York.

Belarusian songs and poems were heard at the meeting. Organizers presented all female participants white and red roses, Radio Svaboda informs.

The festive meeting dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Belarusian National Republic and in support of struggle against Lukashenka’s dictatorship was organized by the Belarusian-American Association (BAZA) and the Union of Belarusian Youth in the USA. Several dozens of participants took part in the meeting.

During the meeting the chairman of the New York department of the BAZA Vital Zajka, leaders of the UBYUSA Mikalay Tsimashenka and Mikita Aharodnik addressed the meeting. The chairman of the Union of Belarusian Youth in the USA Mikalay Tsimashenka reminded about the second anniversary of the events in Minsk on Kalinouski Square. He called to pay homage to courage of fighters of the Square.

Alyaksandra Makaruk, a member of the Union of Belarusian Youth in the USA, shared her impressions after the meeting:

“This Saturday I took part in the peaceful demonstration dedicated to Freedom Day in our country. We had a chance to meet each other, to greet each other, but besides we remembered the hard path of our motherland towards this day, and why we had been forced to forget about it, why our sacred flag was changed, and why we have to meet here, in the US, with posters in front of the UN Headquarters, and not with our relatives in Belarus. It is wonderful, and it is sad… But it should be a joyful holiday! We want every Belarusian to have a chance to celebrate this holiday freely… Happy holiday! It’s our common birthday too!”
