Belarusian authorities achieved their aim: European Union may impose sanctions in three weeks

Breaking up of the peaceful demonstration on 25 March in Minsk and persecution of independent journalists may turn into new sanctions by the EU against the Belarusian regime.

MEP Jacek Protasiewicz, Chairman of Delegation for Relations with Belarus, didn’t exclude such possibility.

The MEP gave an interview to Deutsche Welle and said the latest actions by the official authorities of Belarus were “absolutely unacceptable, unexpected, and incomprehensible.”

According to him, relations between Belarus and the European Union have begun to improve since last autumn, but persecution of independent journalists in Minsk and regions as well as actions by security agencies during the opposition action on 15 March in Minsk have become a new incomprehensible turn in the relations between Belarus and Europe.

“To my regret, the European Union has just one weapon now – words,” Jacek Protasiewicz said. “We condemn latest actions by the Belarusian regime and call on A. Lukashenka to stop this cruel policy towards the independent media and oppositionists.”

“I think, the decision on sanctions against Belarus may be taken already in three weeks,” the politician said.
