Belarusian political emigrants meet with MEP Migalski

The main issue discussed during the meeting was effectiveness of visa restrictions imposed by the EU on Belarusian officials.

Euroradio has learned this from Syarhei Aksimovich, a representative of the Office of Belarusian Political Refugees.

According to Aksimovich, the EU institutions discuss the degree of efficiency of visa sanctions. Belarusian political refugees told the member of the European Parliament the sanctions really worked. To prove this fact, they mentioned a negative reaction of Belarusian official media.

As noted by Aksimovich, the EU did not plan to review sanctions. It was discussed at the meeting whether the existing sanctions should be extended. The Office of Political Refugees spoke in favour of extending sanctions.

Other topics, among them looking for new ways of cooperation with Belarus, were discussed at the meeting with Marek Migalski. According to Aksimovich, political emigrants suggested the EU should waive or reduce visa fees for all Belarusians and especially for students. Educational projects for students and prospects for Internet TV in the Belarusian language were also touched.
