The Israel ambassador noticed political prisoners after six months in Belarus

Israel is tracking the situation with human rights and political prisoners in Belarus.

This was stated by Yaakov Livne, the Head of Eurasia department in Israeli Foreign Ministry, on the press-conference in Minsk, reports BelaPAN.

“We are watching this problem and discussing it during meetings with Belarusian, European and American colleagues”, - said he.

“We are trying to discuss this problem behind closed doors and not in the press”, - pointed he.

“You supposed to understand that Israel is not a central player in this area. We know European, American positions well and, of course, listen to them”, - stated Livne.

He also noted that the political dialogue between Belarus and Israel “for the last years became more honest, mutual understanding between countries became better”.

Israel ambassador in Belarus Joseph Shagal reported that the countries “maintain a very good dialogue where this questions (human rights, political prisoners) are also discussed”, - writes BelaPAN.

At the same time he noted that “there are a lot of things, speaking of which openly would be pointless just because of one reason: to avoid any damage to the processes which have been emerged and are being carried out today”.

Recall, as Charter97.org reported before, on February 15 on his first press-conference in Minsk the new Israel ambassador Joseph Shagal stated that he do not know about political prisoners in Belarus.

“I am a citizen of Israel, we don’t have political prisoners. What concerns Belarus, I don’t know, I need to read newspapers. After half-year I will answer your question, - said the ambassador. - I am a journalist by myself, and I perfectly know how they write articles. Have you been in camps for political prisoners?”
