Lukashenka: I am concerned about situation in Hrodna region

The dictator instructed the KGB chief to analyse the situation in the Hrodna region.

Lukashenka said he was concerned about the situation in the region and asked Valery Vakulchyk to provide him with information, Interfax reports.

“I am not just concerned. I remember what it was before. The country’s only case of governor assassination took place there. We know the circumstances. I know that certain states pay excessive attention to the Hrodna region,” Lukashenka said as he heard the report by Vakulchyk on Thursday.

The dictator turned attention to the work of the KGB in preventing crimes, especially corruption-related crimes.

“There are rather serious cases. Using your materials it was possible to curtail the activities of certain people in business and government bodies. But when analysing this process I can see that the efforts are not sufficient,” he said.

He noted he had concerns about insufficient work of prosecution bodies in this area. “You have special methods, but prosecutors cannot work without you,” Lukashenka said.

The ruler ordered regional KGB department to analyse the social, political and economic situation in the regions and provide him with comprehensive information.

“I would like to know your position, your opinion. It is impartial and absolutely objective because you can analyse cause and effect relations,” Lukashenka said.

In 1993, chairman of the Hrodna regional executive committee Dzmitry Artsimenia was shot dead near his home. He was the only high-ranking executive in Belarus who was killed since the beginning of the perestroika. After the death of <>bPiotr Masherau, the first secretary of Belarusian committee of the Soviet Union's Communist Party, he was the most high-ranking official killed before retirement or resignation.
