Leader of the Party of Communists of Belarus Syarhei Kalyakin is the only of the leaders of the United Democratic Forces, who supported proclamation of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Kalyakin told in an interview to “Nasha Niva” newspaper “our country gained its independence in a rather strange way...”
“Abkhazia and Ossetia are not worse than Kosovo Albanians. If the world recognised independence of Kosovo, why then can’t it do it with other countries? Peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia said they want to live in independent states. What is wrong with it? Proclamation of independence is not only possible but also necessary. Belarus also should to recognise the will of these peoples. It’s not a secret that our country gained its independence in a rather strange way, when three men signed the Belavezha Accords which declared the USSR dissolved. The international community recognised Belarus as an independent state. So, I think similar things may happen again now,” Kalyakin said.
Note of the Charter’97 press-centre: The leader of the party of Communists of Belarus Syarhei Kalyakin has always been actively opposing “the US aggression in Iraq. Once he organized rallies in Minsk in support of Saddam Hussein. Moreover, his party was among the structures which violated the UN sanctions’ regime against Iraqi authorities. However, it was not interfering Kalyakin to be a great friend of the US, visit Washington many times, and even have a personal meeting with US President George Bush.
