Lyavon Barshcheuski: “Autocracy cannot remain in the center of Europe in 2010”

Lyavon Barshcheuski, a BPF party leader, wishes the Belarusians to live in a free democratic Belarus next year.

The Belarusians should become interested in public problems in 2010, as solving personal questions is impossible without this, a BPF leader Lyavon Barshcheuski told the website charetr’97.org in answer to a question “What would you wish the Belarusians in new year?”

“I’d like to with the Belarusians to become interested in public problems, not only their personal matters. Solving personal matters is impossible without solving public ones,” Lyavon Barshcheuski believes. “Changes will come only if people take interest in independent press, independent opinion and stop believe these fairytales of the Belarusian TV.”

The opposition leader also hopes the EU will draw up a common policy towards the Belarusian authorities in 2010.

“The EU policy should become principle, based on moral values: freedom of speech, freedom of media, holding free elections. Now making these conditions, the European Union sis just giving a hand to the Belarusian regime,” the politician said.

Lyavon Barshcheuski expects changes in internal political life in Belarus in 2010.

“I hope the Belarusian political forces, real ones, not those imitating activity, will be able to unite and work out the common strategy, which will be close to the people of Belarus. As many people, I expects changes next year. This parochial autocracy cannot remain in the center of Europe in 2010.
