Duty-free import of goods worth up to 200 euros permitted in Belarus

The State Customs Committee has prepared a draft document offering changes in order of duty-free import of goods.

“We offer taking down the sum of duty-free import from 1,000 euros to 200, but we will have maximally loyal attitude to all tourists,” “Komsomolskaya Pravda v Belarusi” quotes Syarhei Barysyuk, deputy head of the State Customs Committee.

This won’t cover the personal belongings you taking for your trip.

“If a tourist is going on holiday and takes a 500-euro camcorder, it must be included in a declaration when leaving the country and then customs tax will be demanded when entering the country. But if one has bought a camcorder abroad at more that 200 euros, the device will need custom clearance,” the official explained.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka signed decree on increasing import duties on household appliances, clothes, footwear, furniture, wine and so on. By these measures the government hopes to unload stocks of national plants and factories. But these norms concerned suppliers. But now common citizens are affected. However, customs officers promise not to bother tourists.

“If an individual returns from the UAE, for example, and he or she visits this country not often then once a year, the customs service won’t have many questions to such people,” Syarhei Barysyuk assured. “But if we are interested in a person who crosses the border often, even some times a day, we will demand such people to show documents confirming the value of the property.”
