Lukashenka sent delegation to Abkhazia. Reasons of visit hidden officially

On May 12, Sergei Bagapsh accepted Uladzimir Makei, head of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s Administration, and Mikalai Korbut, first deputy executive officer of Belarusian president.

As the official website of unrecognized Abkhazia reports, the parties discussed issues of Abkhazia-Belarus relations in different areas during the meeting.

But Lukashenka’s Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affaires of Belarus refuse to comment on the visit of Belarusian officials to unrecognized Abkhazia.

The Belarusian delegation is to spend two days in Abkhazia. Nothing is reported about other members of the delegation.

As we have informed, Alyaksandr Lukashenka told last September Belarus would recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia. President of unrecognized South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity later said Lukashenka had promised him the republic would be recognized.

On February 23, foreign minister of the Czech Republic, holding presidency of the EU, Karel Schwarzenberg told at the session of the EU’s Council Belarus would face serious difficulties with possible participation in the Eastern Partnership program and fall out of European context if it recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia. This position of the EU’s leadership was supported by Javier Solana, EU High Representative on the Common Foreign and Security Policy, who spokesperson said the EU’s policy, based on territorial integrity of Georgia, stands for unrecognizing South Ossetia and Abkhazia as subject of international law.

In March, the United States expressed their support of actions by Belarus postponing recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

“A position of the Belarusian authorities on the issue of recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was right so far,” said Jonathan Moore, US charge d'affaires a.i. in Belarus. According to Moore, an issue on recognition of these breakaway republics by Belarus may become a serious obstacle for developing relations with the West.
