Four days of attack on www.charter97.org: We fought off due to your solidarity

26

The powerful DDoS attack on Charter’97 website stopped today’s morning.

The attack started in the morning June 8 and lasted till June 12 with varying intensity. More than 5000 compromised computers making a botnet were involved in the attack. Our website technical service managed to minimize the attack consequences and the website was available for users on June 9.

Unfortunately, we had to preserve traffic filtration to the server, so some users won’t be able to open the site directly. Our recommendation is to use anonymizers and proxies to open the website. We apologize for any inconveniences.

The Charter’97 press center suspects the Belarusian secret services to stand behind the attack on the website. It’s not the first attempt of the Belarusian authorities to control information on the internet. Having closed most of the independent newspapers, blocked the access to TV and radio for the opposition, systematically suppressing of the freedom of speech, the regime of Alyaksandr Lukashenka has been trying to suffocate the freedom of speech on the internet.

We again thank our colleagues on Radio Svaboda, Russian internet-resources Lenta.ru and Polit.ru, BelaPAN information agency, Euroradio, the a rel=nofollow href=http://baj.by>Belarusian Association of Journalists, websites Electroname.com, Bybanner.com, www.ITSec.Ru, Ukrainian newspaper “Zavtra”, Kazakh internet-newspapers Zona and Meta, and other media for your solidarity and support.
