Belarusian MPs to visit Syria

An official visit of the Belarusian “parliamentary” delegation to the Syrian Arab Republic is scheduled for January 26–29.

The Belarusian delegation is headed by Uladzimir Andreichanka, the chairman of the “house of representatives”.

The delegation includes Viktar Huminski, chairman of the standing commission for national security of the “house of representatives” and a member of the working group for cooperation with the Syrian parliament of the “house of representatives”; and two members of the standing commission for international affairs and national security of the “council of the republic”: Kanstantsin Sumar, chairman of the Brest region executive committee, and Alyaksandr Shakutsin, chairman of the board of Amkodor company.

The delegation is supposed to have meetings with the Syrian leadership, including Speaker of the People’s Council (the Parliament) Mahmoud al-Abrash. It is also planned to hold talks with the Syrian governmental bodies and representatives of the country’s business circles. Kanstantsin Sumar also plans to visit Syrian governorates Idlib and Aleppo, BelTA reports.

The parties are expected to discuss the expansion of bilateral cooperation, the strengthening of trade and economic interaction, and the development of inter-regional dialogue.

As charter97.org has recently informed, the US Congress is to consider the bill Belarus Arms Transfers Accountability Act of 2009. In accordance with the reports issued, Belarus has been a significant supplier of rockets, mortars, antitank weapons, and mines to Palestinian extremist groups and to state sponsors of terrorism, such as Iran and Syria, as well as Mi-24 helicopters, artillery systems and Russian-origin armored combat vehicles to the Government of Sudan, tanks to the communist regime in North Korea, and military aircraft and aircraft engines to Iran.
