Action of solidarity with prisoner of conscience Yan Mikhailau held in Minsk (Photo)

1

Young Front activists handed round leaflets with information about arrested church goer Yan Mikhailau near the Kamarouski Market on Solidarity Day February 16.

In such a way youth activists try to attract public attention to a problem of arresting draftees for demand for alternative military service.

As the Young Front press service reports, Yan Mikhailau has four sisters and two brothers. Being the eldest child, he helped to maintain the family. He wanted to carry out alternative service, but was thrown to jail for three months.

It is supposed that the activist was denied the alternative service as he had taken part in opposition demonstrations. The Constitution of Belarus guarantees the right for alternative service, but appropriate laws haven’t been worked yet.

Amnesty International, an Influential human rights organization, recognized Yan Mikhailau prisoner of conscience on February 3.
