March 25 is the 92th anniversary of proclamation of the Belarusian National Republic.
Officially, the holiday is not celebrated in Belarus, but the democratic society marks it as Freedom Day every year.
The action is organized by the Belarusian Popular Front party. BPF leader Alyaksei Yanukevich, head of the Minsk BPF branch Viktar Ivashkevich, and about 10 oppositionists, potential candidates for local council members, applied for holding a demonstration. The United Civil Party, the For Freedom movement, and other parties and associations support the demonstration. Andrei Sannikov, the leader of the European Belarus civil campaign, called on the Belarusians to take to streets to mark Freedom Day on March 25.
It is planned to carry out a rally and a meeting in Minsk on March 25. Participants of the action are expected to gather near the presidium of the National Academy of Science at 6:00 p.m. The meeting has been permitted by the Minsk city executive committee.
The route of the rally hasn’t been defined. The organizers planned to march from Academy of Science to Yanka Kupala Park along Independence Avenue. But the route wasn’t permitted by the city authorities. Instead, the route to Bangalore square along Surhanau Street was proposed. As a result, it was decided that the demonstrators would choose a route.
