Incomes of pro-governmental candidate kept in secret

Information about income of candidates to the district council hasn’t been published.

This fact was noticed by Syarhei Nyarouny, editor of the newspaper “Volny Horad” and candidate to the region council.

“The district newspaper “Krichevskaya Zhizn” published a list of candidates. However, information about the property and incomes for 2009 is absent, though it is provided for by part 21 of article 68 of the Electoral Code of Belarus,” the journalist told in an interview to the campaign “Human Rights Activists for Free Elections”.

The candidate contacted Tatsyana Iukina, the editor of “Krichevskaya Zhizn”, on the matter. “The editor said nobody had obliged her to do this and given necessary data,” Nyarouny said.

He noted that unwillingness to show information about income is favourable for pro-governmental candidates. They have huge salaries amid poverty in the region.

“Mikalai Hyardzei has already filed an appropriate statement to the prosecutor’s office. We are waiting for an official answer. If we have it and information about the candidates’ incomes is not published, will complain to the Mahilou region election commission,” Nyarouny said.
