In such a way Dalia Grybauskaite responded to the question of journalists about the progress of relations with Belarus.
Among the priorities of Lithuanian foreign policy remain Scandinavia, the Baltic States, European integration, the US and open mutually beneficial relations with neighbours. These priorities of the foreign policy were named by Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite at the meeting with ambassadors, ru.DELFI.lt reports. As said by Grybauskaite, in communications with neighbours we should be open, but not necessarily naive.
“First of all, we must be open for relations, we see positive tendencies, but undoubtedly, we are not naïve, we cautiously view some initiatives which are not exactly useful for us, but we are open for a dialogue and cooperation,” the president answered to the question of journalists about development of relations with Eastern neighbours – Russia and Belarus.
As said by her, the most important place in the foreign policy of Lithuania should be occupied by relations with such countries as Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, as they had become a part of the Eastern partnership Program of the EU.
Grybauskaite underlined that she had met with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili four times. The President of Lithuania is often reproached for not inviting Saakashvili to the 20th anniversary of independence and she had not attended the same celebration in Georgia.
To the question whether she is satisfied with the diplomatic corps of Lithuania, she said that sometimes diplomats are lacking energy, inventiveness and independence, but in general the diplomatic corps is strong and professional.
