The rector of the Belarusian State University (BSU), Syarhei Ablameika, is the first Belarusian scientist to be elected acting member of Academia Europaea.
As the BSU press service reports, Academia Europaea is a non-governmental organization uniting scientists from all European countries. The London-based organization was founded in 1988 and has 2,300 scientists from 35 European countries and 8 non-European countries. Over 40 Nobel Prize winners are members of the Academy.
To become a member of Academia Europea a candidate for membership must be proposed by two members of the Academy, one of them must be resident of a different country from that of the candidate.
It should be noticed that Ablameika, as rectors of Belarus’s five leading universities, was banned from entering the EU. He was included in the EU blacklist for politically motivated repressions against students.
