At last Lukashenka decided to comment on the foreign currency crisis, which has swept through the country.
As it turned out, the reason for the disastrous situation in the foreign exchange market was not a giant imbalance in the foreign trade, and not a populist salary hike in the run-up to the elections, but bicyclists automobilists.
“Certainly, we have been greatly harmed by the car boom. We have looked at it, and there was more than a billion [US dollars] there. There have even been offers to impose customs duties now. But it would be s a blow at people. Why should we put pressure on our own people? If we would be able to bear this, let the people buy the car they want, change the car if needed. We should not stifle people because of this currency,” said the so-called president today during his visit to a toy plant “Palesye”.
“But frankly speaking: when you have hard currency – go and buy things, and sell them, when you do not – we would not take take from reserves any more. The gold and foreign exchange reserves are a sacred thing. We should replenish them,” stressed the self-proclaimed president.
“Well, people want to buy foreign currency, nothing could be done about it. For that reason I told the National Bank and the government that we shouldn’t stamp on people. May people fulfill their desire,” said Alyaksandr Lukashenka.
The head of state believes that the higher number of personal cars in Belarus will also have its advantage, as accompanying services are required to be provided. It will produce new jobs, higher fuel sales and the tax base.
“Therefore, it should be treated with calm. Yes, there was some frenzy. It is much lower now and tends to go down,” he noted. “But people will not complain that we prevented them from buying what they want.”
“The most important thing is to sell more than we import. We should stop living at the expense of someone,” concluded Lukashenka in the in the manner of Captain Obvious.
