Sanctions in response to terror (Photo)

14

An action of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners was held in Warsaw on May 16.

The picket was attended by activists of European Belarus civil campaign and other Belarusians. The activists were holding portraits of political prisoners, taken hostages by the Belarusian regime after post-election protests on December 19, 2010, and a banner “STOP TERROR IN BELARUS”.

Residents of Warsaw put their signatures under the EP resolution on imposing economic sanctions against the regime of Lukashenka.

Passers-by eagerly signed the resolution, expressed their solidarity with and support to the political prisoners. European Belarus intends to hand over the gathered signatures to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.

We remind that the European Parliament has called on the EU to impose sanctions on the Belarusian authorities and urged Minsk to stop persecution of the presidential candidates.

As the document notes, the European Union should “extend the restrictive measures against the Belarusian regime, including by imposing targeted economic sanctions, in particular against state-owned enterprises”.

MEPs also called on official Minsk to acquit the presidential candidates and stop their persecution. The MEPS find the presented charges with organizing mass disorders “illegal and inadmissible”.
