Political prisoner Drozd: I ask to give me eight, ten years…

Historian Zmitser Drozd, a member of Sannikov’s team, said this in his final word at a trial over participants of demonstration on the Square.

A prosecutor asks 3.5 years in prison for the historian for taking part in “mass disorders”, “Nasha Niva” newspaper reminds.

“I regard this final word as really final.

I have not been preparing myself for prison during 40 years of my life. I avoided bandit companies. What I am watching now is a gift from heaven for me as a historian.

A time machine took us in 1938. I am in a cell because I love Belarus…” Zmitser Drozd said.

The judge interrupted him and called to speak about the materials of the case.

Drozd said he had lived in Russia for seven years, had a good job and a flat in Moscow centre, but he wanted to do something more. He returned to Belarus because he loves his country. “The elections are falsified,” Drozd was repeating in a confident and cam tone. The Judge was silent.

“Everyone who came to the Square had a reason to do this. No one planned extremist actions. Otherwise I would have taken a bayonet, not a megaphone.

The investigator told me that I would get three and a half years if I did not admit my guilt, and three years if I admitted it…

Is it a normal thing to get three years in prison for three blows at a board? People had been peaceful until police began to beat them with batons. I do not understand why the prosecutor does not want to watch this video.

Only in our country white is called black and black is called white.

Belarusian TV (BT) is called Goebbels TV not without a reason. The situation in our country cannot be considered normal.

I do not see that I violated any items of the law.

I came to the door the last, when riot policemen were running there. I received my punishment from riot policemen just on the site: it was blows at my head and back. I served ten days of administrative arrest in Zhodzina. I have been in a pretrial detention facility for the fourth month. I am considered to be a malicious criminal who can flee from the country.

I am not an extremist, but a person who loves his country. I ask to sentence me to eight, ten years, but let me stay at home and fulfill my plans on creative work,” Drozd said.

Judgements to Zmitser Drozd, Pavel Vinahradau, Ales Kirkevich, Andrei Protasenya and Uladzimir Khamichenka will be delivered today at 5:00 pm.
