Shushkevich: Only sanctions will help to release political prisoners

Commenting on the diplomatic crisis in the EU, the first leader of Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich stated that only sanctions will yield tangible results.

- There is no other move helpful against rabid craziness and obscurantism. There is no other move except showing solidarity with Belarus, with the martyr nation and with political prisoners.

I think that the Belarusian state would encounter additional difficulties because of this scandal. And Lukashenka would have to agree to release political prisoners. They have set a clear goal.

- And if we compare the today’s situation with the departure of ambassadors with the situation during the scandal with the residence in Drazdy?

- I think it was a trifle as compared to this situation.

Besides, in the interview to Radio Svaboda Shushkevich noted:

“Lukashenka has a well-developed ability to create enemies, both from within and abroad. And now in order to distract people from home problems, from the tangible reduction of wages and pensions, those who are guilty would be clearly defined. They are the entire Europe. I foresee rabid anti-European propaganda. Almost the same is happening in Russia. To create a great empire is the main message of Putin. So it is happening simultaneously.”
