Lithuanian Premiere backed sanctions against dictator’s “purses”

Lithuania backs the sanctions planned by the EU against Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, not against large manufacturing outfits of this country.

It has been stated by Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilis, Delfi reports.

He called groundless the fears that the EU could start imposing sanctions against business in Belarus.

“I think a lot of inaccurate information exists, as the news has been disseminated, or some country had offered sanctions to be applied against large manufacturing enterprises in Belarus: potassium plants, chemical industry. As far as we know, this would not happen, it is not planned,” the Prime Minister said on Thursday in an interview to Žinių radijаs.

As said by him, such sanctions would be unwise, as common citizens of Belarus would be the ones to suffer from them most.

“Sanctions against people close to Lukashenka are continued. Some of them are businessmen, but this list is limited. Such apprehensions are groundless,” Kubilius said.

He stressed that Lithuania is interested for the EU to have a common policy towards Belarus.

“Such a policy would allow Belarus overcome its internal problems, and Lukashenka’s regime – to come to understand that elementary human rights, elementary democratic rights are indispensable conditions for Belarus to become more open for Europe economically, and thus seek wellbeing of its citizens,” Kubilius said.
