Prayer under police surveillance in Homiel

A prayer under the surveillance of people in mufti took place in Homiel in the framework of the Wave of Solidarity action.

On 3 March members of the organizational committee for the creation of a party Belarusian Christian Democracy held a prayer for political prisoner in Homiel. They also disseminated information materials in the city about the Belarusians who are in prisons for their beliefs, political and civic activities, the human rights center Viasna reports.

“The issue of political prisoners in the country remains one of the main and until it is solved there can be no dialogue or any relations with the authorities. This is the problem that unites our democratic community”, - the coordinator of BChD for the Homiel region Yury Klimovich noted.

The action – a prayer under the party’s flag – took place at the ninth kilometer of the highway Homiel-Charnihau. It is exactly there that thousands of people were shot during the years of repressions. Now crosses are installed in this place and the activists gathered near one of them.

“We decided to hold a prayer near a cross, it is probably the only place out of the city where we can gather since the authorities do not allow any pickets or meetings. That is why what is left for us is to gather here, outside the city, where our predecessors lie. Here on the both sides of the highway people were killed by NKVD. We gathered at this sacred place”, - the coordinator added.

The action was observed by unidentified people in mufti, who filmed the participants with a video camera.
