The leaders of Belarusian opposition have lodged a legal application to the Prosecutor General of Belarus relating the fact of eavesdropping.

Charter97.org was informed about that by the press-service of the United Civil Party.

In connection with the eavesdropping device detected in “Salodki Falvarak” (The Sweet Folwark) café, Anatol Liabedzka, Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Niakliaeu have addressed the Prosecutor General of Belarus.

They demand to answer: “whether the General Prosecutor’s Office has given a sanction for eavesdropping on our phones, our private conversations to the KGB (State Security Committee), the Investigative Committee or other Belarusian agencies or special services? If the sanction had been given, what reasons had it had, and under which laws? If the General Prosecutor’s Office had not sanctioned that, we demand to open a criminal case upon monitoring of our phones, organizing of our conversations’ eavesdropping, invasion of Belarusian special services (and employees of Salodki Falvarak café) on our privacy.”

It appears that eavesdropping was a usual practice in this café. It was said by the former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich.

“During the “elections” I used this café as a meeting place for conversations with journalists, and soon I noticed that as soon as I sit at a table, napkin holders are changed there, – Mikalai Statkevich said. – I examined it, but I didn’t dare to disassemble it in the eyes of journalists. Anatol is a wise head, as he has done that. I do not know what they wanted to hear or to show, something like they are monitoring everything, we are at work, or they wanted to pick some phrase or scare the owner of the place…

As for me, I view such measures with irony. All the more so, as for the period of the last five years I had been observed every 5 minutes through a door viewer of a prison cell. I understand perfectly well, what country I live in.”
