Belarus agrees to represent Russia at CFE negotiations

Belarus has agreed to represent Russia's interests in the Joint Consultative Group (JCG) of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE).

Dzmitry Mironchyk, a spokesman for the Belarusian MFA, said it, commenting on Russia's proposal, BelaPAN reports.

“The Joint Consultative Group remains the most convenient format for Belarus for exchanging views on the future of the CFE regime with other CFE member states. We think meaningful discussions on the issue can be resumed in the JCG if all interested parties have political will,” the MFA's representative said.

Alexander Mazur, the head of the Russian delegation to the Vienna talks over military security and arms control said at a JCG meeting on March 10 that Russia took a decision to suspend its participation in JCG sessions from March 11, 2015. The suspension of the CFE Treaty announced by Russia in 2007 becomes complete.

In this regard, the Russian Federation asked Belarus to represent its interests in the Joint Consultative Group.
