New MEPs have decided to take Belarusian political prisoners under patronage.

Mikalai Statkevich's wife Maryna Adamovich told Belsat TV channel.

Adamovich notes the decision must demonstrate Belarusian authorities that democratic values remain even amid large-scale geopolitical shifts.

This initiative means that every Belarusian political prisoner has a representative in democratic institutions in European countries.

"We (relatives) do hope this person will monitor the situation and remind European politicians about no improvements in democracy in Europe, and will try with our help to release prisoners and make Belarus one of the democratic countries", Maryna Adamovich noted.

On May 12 in Brussels, relatives of political prisoners met with representatives of the European Parliament. The establishment of a special group on the fate of political prisoner in Belarus has become the message to official Minsk.
