Independence Day of Belarus

On July 27, 1990 the BSSR Supreme Council adopted Declaration on State Sovereignty.

The document was the first official step to our independence.

The Declaration proclaimed "a complete state sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus, as well as supremacy, independence and all powers of government within the country, competence of its laws, and republic independence in external relations".

It has become the beginning of new history of our country.

July 27 became the Independence Day of Belarus.

On August 25, 1991 the Declaration was granted the status of the constitutional law, it became the ground for amendments to the Constitution of 1978 year. On March 15, 1994 the new Constitution of the Republic of Belarus was adopted.

The referendum of 1996 year abolished the holiday, but granted unlimited powers to Lukashenka. The celebration of Independence Day has been moved on July 3, the day of liberation of Minsk from Nazi invaders. The democratic community celebrates Independence Day on July 27.

Congratulations, dear friends!
