Lady in White

Servants play with Lukashenka's conscience driving him to madness.

The other day I read "Aliaksandr Lukashenka and Kolya and an unknown woman in a white robe visited Christmas service." My first thought - he is not allowed from home without a nurse anymore. Then I read more attentively - not in a white robe but in a white headscarf. Perhaps, if there are Freudian slips of tongue, that was a classic Freudian "cleansing". Lady in white robe standing next to the ruler has been desirable, anyway, Lukashenka's behavior shows it.

Yesterday he seriously told that the state was the main guarantor of people's security, today he justifies a policeman who rushed into an apartment on the eve of the New Year and fired on an unarmed person in Minsk.

Yesterday he stamped his foot because "intention of some gentlemen to present the Belarusians people tribeless", and today requires Russian bankers to "treat Belarus like Russia".

First he says that the increase of tariff rates for housing and utility services will cause growth of non-payments and then takes this increase.

First he says that there is no crisis and then asks others for a penny.

First he orders to kidnap and kill, and then presents awards for spiritual resurgence.

First he mows grass with Chyzh and then arrests him.

First he says that tomorrow an average salary to be equal to $500, and then explains that Belarusian wages are low - Russia buys less Belarusian production.

First he urges women to bear children and then calls them spongers.

First he kisses the Koran and then keeps a candle in his hands in an Orthodox Church.

Well, Lukashenka has had problems with logic of deeds and sayings before. But it used to be covered by longer intervals of time between mutually exclusive statements. Now it reminds of high-speed cinematography. And I even know what movie it reminds me of.

Can you remember Undeground by Emir Kusturica? There the Yugoslav partisan Marko kidnaps his friend nicknamed Cherny captured by the Gestapo. And hides him in the basement. Then he dates with his bride, makes career in the party and decides to leave Cherny in the basement. Fifteen years after the war Cherny is still there. He is said that the war is still waging and he believes it. After all, each time going down to the basement to visit a friend, Marco ties bloody bandages and tells how he has been tortured by the Gestapo and brings a summary of the front-line news and sends greetings from comrade Tito, who asks Cherny to stay in the basement until the crucial juncture. And when Cherny leaves the basement, he loses his mind.

It looks like this is the way servants manipulate Lukashenka's mind driving him to madness. They keep him in a sterile world of his residency in Drazdy and keep him under surveillance and change his picture of the world every day. I don't know who's scenario they follow - aliens', the Kremlin's or crazy Dr. Doofenshmirtz's or their own (however, the last one is barely possible, they have no imagination for it). Today in front of Drazdy gates tie bloody bandages around themselves and say the war wages, a gas pipe is exploded, oil plants are occupied and people are taken into slavery. Tomorrow they bake a cake, put clear clothes on and report that the heaven has come along with communism, people are happy and asks to give the ruler the cake. The day after tomorrow they wear spick-and-span European suits and say with shining smiles that the decision on accession of Belarus to the European Union is approved, it's time to pack things to Brussels for ceremonial EU-wide inauguration and to Zurich to open legal accounts.

Two days later they report in a whisper that confidential information says that an arrest warrant has been issued in Lubyanka and there is a need to barricade and hide, turn off the light to let a "black raven" drive by and to make the NKVD think that Lukashenka is not at home. Give him Koran and say "kiss it, you must", then bring him to church and give a candle and say "hold it, don't drop it or everything can burn down".

And he believes, because there is no other variants or not to believe anyone. But it is fraught with loop of vigilance and enemies around. It is better to believe. And there must be a lady in a white robe in case of travel out of Drazdy.
