Greedy Officials Rolled Back Small Town Near Vitsebsk To "Stone Age"

The residents of the rural town of Surazh are surprised by the indifference of the authorities.

Instead of a bridge across the river Dzvina, the rural town residents have to use the ferry crossing. But the number of ferry travellings decreases and can no longer meet the people’s demands. The impossibility of crossing was explained by a low water level first, when the river flooded back, the travelling number didn’t increase, Belsat writes.

The ferrymen were laying fault with a shortage of fuel

"We do not have fuel, there is no money in the district executive committee. You can seek help from the governor. Here we are, back to the Stone Age," – a local woman is outraged.

The ferrymen claim that 25 liters of diesel per day is needed for a stable crossing, and they simply do not have that much fuel.

The ferrymen refused refuse to comment explicitly

They explain this by the fact that later they will have to write explanatory notes to their superiors.

"We need a bridge, and this ferry is decrepit, rotten ... The boat is standing there, it is rusty as well. When there is no ice – there is no crossing. The pharmacy is there, the post office is there, the doctors are there, and what are we to do?" – a local summer resident cmplains.

According to residents, there is an impression that the authorities have forgotten about Surazh. The boat, which was supposed to get a temporary crossing going, is standing idle at the quay, the ferry does not have the fuel for functioning. The situation with ferry crossing across the river might be improved when the small town gets in focus of a camera lens.
