Uladzimir Niakliaeu: We Will Build New Belarus Together

The Belarusians have realized that it’s their obligation to successfully achieve the new life.

Poet, one of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress Uladzimir Niakliaeu has told this in an interview to Charter97.org.

- Yesterday’s mass action in Brest has become a sensation. What are your personal impressions?

- The best ever possible. What happened in Brest shows that the Belarusians are waking up after the political sleep. The reason for that is not only the coming of the calendar spring, the people have started to understand that such situation in the country cannot go on any longer. The regime carouses while the people live in misery. It has also become obvious that the authorities fear the splash of the people’s outrage, trying to conteract to that by all means. However, it is also obvious this would lead nowhere.

- Brest residents said yesterday they planned to go to Minsk to participate inthe action on March 25. Why is this action considered a key one?

- Mach 25 is a remarkable date of the Belarusian history. This year, we are celebrating the 99th anniversary of the formation of the Belarusian People’s Republic, getting prepared to the 100th jubilee. Still, our government tends to forget about this date due to some reason, but recalls something else – the 100th anniversary of the Soviet militia.This clearly shows the essence of the regime and its priorities.

Getting back to the events that we all expect, I would like to say that we will see a lot of protest-minded people who will make the regime do what it had long had to do. And it's not only the abolition of the decree number 3. We expect political and economic reforms so those unconstitutional laws and the conditions in which the people of Belarus are living, would disappear forever from our lives.

Our victory in the struggle for a democratic and free Belarus depends only on us. Not on the West, which has its own political and economic goals, not on the East, which does not even consider us as an independent state. Only we can build the future. So come to the action, do not be afraid. Together we will build a new Belarus.
