Don’t Keep Silence!
MIKALAI STATKEVICH

It is vital to tell the truth about the confinement conditions in the KGB prison.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress Mikalai Statkevich wrote this on Facebook.

“Our ally Siarhei Kuntsevich has been held in the KGB prison since March, allegedly for the “mass riots preparation”. Recently, Siarhei managed to pass a message to the outside, in which he called on Belarusians not to be afraid of the dictatorship, based on brutality and fear. He also informed that right after the detention on the eve of the Freedom Day on March 25, he had been tortured with an electric shocker to find out my whereabouts.

Over 30 people were detained in the “mass riots preparation” case. Half of them were released later. The allies of the released state they had also been tortured in custody. However, they cannot tell anything about the tortures as they signed an obligation on non-disclosure.

I do not find such a position either moral or legal. According to Article 20 of the Constitution, tortures are unacceptable. They are considered a criminal offense. Declaring this crime is a civic duty. No "obligations" can cancel such a debt. I'm not talking about moral responsibility to those who remained in custody. Your silence allows to torture them further on.

Follow the example of Siarhei Kuntsevich, who managed to report tortures from prison, despite the fact he could face a much more fearful revenge from the criminal headsmen there. Act decently, so that you will not be ashamed to live further on.”
