Hundreds Of Belarusians Gathered In Kurapaty On Night Of Executed Poets

The participants unfurled a large national flag.

Yesterday at 20.00, the Night of Executed Poets began in the Kurapaty tract. For the third year in a row, on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression, people gathered there to read poems and commemorate the victims of Stalin's repressions.

More than 300 people came to Kurapaty to the Night of the Executed Poets.

The participants unfurled a big national flag. They also lit candles on the crosses across the tract. Those present read out the list of those executed that night, nn.by reports.

The clergy opened the event.

We remind you that on the night of October 29-30, 1937, more than 100 representatives of the Belarusian intelligentsia, including 22 writers, were shot in the basements of the Minsk NKVD inner prison, "Americanka".

The readings continued for 3 hours.

In 1930-1950s, about 600 thousand people were repressed in Belarus. About 200 thousand of them died. Presumably, about 30 thousand of those executed were buried in Kurapaty.
