What's Left Of Mark Shahal's Wife's House Is Destroyed In Vitsebsk
MARK SHAHAL

The disrespect of the authorities for history outrages local residents.

Excavation works are going on in Vitsebsk. They are digging the trench for the heating main through the basement of the former Brozi hotel in Vitsebsk (it was demolished after the war), where Bella Rosenfeld, wife of Belarusian artist Mark Shahal, lived. This is what People's News of Vitsebsk writes about.

On May 23, the escalator dug up what was left of the so-called Wittenberg house, where the Brozi hotel, as well as jewelry store of Shmul Neuh Rosenfeld, was located. Mark Shahal married Rosenfeld's daughter, Bella Rosenfeld.

The excavator bucket broke through the floor structure of the former hotel, and a hole appeared leading to the preserved room, most likely the hotel basement. Since the floor structure was not damaged during the war, this room was not covered with soil. But the workers blocked the passage inside with debris and earth. If they keep building the trench in this place, the floor structures will simply be destroyed.

This attitude of the authorities towards the remains of the building, which was once planned even to be restored, is "extremely surprising" for the locals. Fortunately, the excavation work has been stopped. According to blogger Andrei Andreyanau, it was possible to call the Ministry of Culture, the information reached the head of the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection, Natallia Khvir, and after her intervention the works were stopped until Monday.
